When I got my design start several years ago, I was laser-focused on making a thing work well and look good. As a designer, I was downstream of the many collaborators waiting for my turn to apply some paint and deliver something worth hanging.
But all that intermediate time between hand-offs and siloed expertise has vanished. Generative tools and agentic support have extended reach and shrunk the capability gap between design and delivery.
Brands are scrapping for attention. My job is to connect new tools and enhanced workflows to what is an unchanging desire to find connection, bolster identity, and build ourselves anew. The business of visual and verbal meaning-making. AI speeds things up, but people still want to feel that a product or brand is reaching for something that confirms the best in us.
